Two tales about finding—or losing--your inner beast.
“I remember how disorienting it was to look down and see two square-toes shoes instead of my own four feet…Keep your mouth shut…keep your shows on your feet. Mouth shut. Shoes on feet. Do not chew on your new penny loafers. Do not." – Karen Russell, “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves.”
Two tales about finding—or losing--your inner beast.
“THE RED FOX FUR COAT” in Portuguese writer Teolinda Gersao’s intriguing tale has unexpected properties, bringing out the inner beast in a humble bank clerk. Gersao has taught at the University of California at Berkeley, and her story is lusciously rendered by Kathleen Chalfont, a multiple award winner for her roles in “Angels in America” and “Wit” among many others.

If “The Red Fox Fur Coat” is about turning into an animal, what happens if you’re already raised as one? “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves,” by Karen Russell, a 2007 Best American Short Stories pick, charts the heartbreaking course from carefree werewolves, to upright citizens of the world. It is delicately rendered by Tony Award-winner (appropriately, for Sondheim’s “Into the Woods”) Joanna Gleason.

"The Red Fox Fur Coat" was terrific, but I wonder if anyone can tell me what that dark orchestral music was that played between stories... was it Prokofiev? It sent shivers down my spine...
Thanks!

Dear George:

You guessed it--it was from Peter and the Wolf.

Hearing Joanna Gleason read "St. Lucy's Home..." on today's broadcast was one of the funniest and most touching things I've heard in a long, long time. Brilliant! When will a CD or tape be available??

Dear Danielle:

Thank you for your note. Please check our website, selectedshorts.org, to see if this title is one of those featured in current or forthcoming CD anthologies.
