Neighborhood to Neighborhood Multimedia Workshop

Rookies documenting the Lower East Side

Friday, October 28, 2011 - 04:12 PM

WNYC

We're currently trying something new: running two simultaneous workshops and calling it Neighborhood to Neighborhood. In partnership with Facing History and Ourselves, Radio Rookies will be producing multimedia stories about their neighborhoods in Crown Heights, Brooklyn and the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Facing History and Ourselves is an organization that teaches students and teachers to learn to combat prejudice with compassion, indifference with participation, and myth and misinformation with knowledge. Rookies at Vanguard High School in Manhattan and the High School for Global Citizenship in Crown Heights will use Facing History themes to report on neighborhood stories.
The Vanguard Rookies will document the Lower East Side, focusing specifically on Avenue D. They started their research by doing a popcorn reading of "Youth Violence on the LES". The Rookies that live in the neighborhood thought the article was an accurate take on their community, but for some of those living in other parts of the city, the article seemed exaggerated.
Over the next three months the Rookies will work in groups to report their take on what's happening on the Lower East Side and in Crown Heights. Watch for their multimedia reports here in early 2012.
