Transcript

Civil rights groups are pushing the NYPD to change its stop and frisk policy and 17-year-old Radio Rookie Edwin Llanos thinks a change might help police gain more people's trust. He's grown up in neighborhoods where officers stop kids all the time -- and a lot of those kids don’t trust cops to help when they're in need. One 2009 study by the Southern Economic Journal suggests kids who don’t trust police look to gangs for protection. Last year, when Edwin got into a tough situation, he wasn't sure who to turn to.

thank you guys for listening to my story and releating it to yours, It took alot of work, but with the help of the producer Courtney Stein we pulled it togther.I feel as if this story has to be more heard, alot of kids my age,and from age spand of 13-15 get held up with situations and don't know what to do and by listening to this story they can have more of an option, and not only the youth but also adults

As an occasional listener, I was impressed by the honesty and personalization of your subject, I even downloaded it for my colleagues (1st time). I work with gang involved youth in NJ.

Keep up the good work and please bring this street thug life into the common persons scope of view. Most people just can't fathom how difficult it can be to grow up in the hood, and then turn out to be a successful healthy person.

This was a great piece - well done Edwin!! You reported on the story with such honesty, clarity and balance. You really managed to make it so human (I loved the baby) and described the situation with the gangs very accurately. Your report showed how it affects young peoples lives, and really how easily they can be enticed to become members. Your style and presentation are really good. Excellent reporting - I hope your courage and truthfulness stays with you and hopefully we will hear more from you.

Thank you for running this story! No-one can really understand the consequences of stop & frisk until we hear about it from people like Edwin, and the communities that the policy targets.
