Howard and Beatrice Rowland, co-authors of the 1974 New York Times Guide to Student Adventures Abroad.

Howard and Beatrice Rowland are the co-authors of the 1974 New York Times Guide to Student Adventures Abroad. They explain that their new book is based on their own summer travel and input from their three teenage children. They say much of the information comes from local tourism agencies and isn’t widely known among the package tour companies from the United States. The book provides options for students to immerse themselves in the travel experience. It shows them how to avoid tourist traps in Europe and other countries by instead traveling to places where the locals like to vacation. The authors invite readers to submit their tips from summer travel to be included in future editions of the book.

The authors also discuss their previous book, The New York Times Guide to the Summer of ‘73 for Teenagers, U.S.A., which has been updated for 1974. The authors say both books share the goal of promoting self-directed, informal learning experiences for young people as a more fulfilling alternative to classroom learning.
