    Margins of the Musical Spectrum

This week, Radio Lab explores the margins of the musical spectrum. Glen Gould adventures to the north in his head, we celebrate Oscar Peterson's 77th birthday with a retrospective. And finally, we continue with our history of rhythm and blues: this week we go back to the begining.

Hour 1 - The Idea of North

Idea of North
Glen Gould sat at the piano all wrong, played it all wrong and in the process revolutionized how we think about the instrument. But at the height of his prominence, Gould inexplicably withdrew from the concert world, stopped performing and devoted himself to, of all things, making radio! The place you might say he withdrew to is the vast unincorporated wilderness of northern Canada. But as he readily admits, it's only an idea...one that may not exist.

Producer: Glen Gould

Hour 2 - Happy Belated Birthday Oscar!

Oscar Peterson
WNYC's Sara Fishko sits down with legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson for some Q&A. Orginally broadcast in August of 2000, we unearthed this one because just last week, August 15, Oscar Peterson turned 77! Our belated birthday tribute.

Host/Producer: Sara Fishko

Hour 3 - RnB Soul Pioneers

Let the Good Times Roll: Soul pioneers of the 50's and 60's
A look at the founding fathers (Ray Charles, James Brown) AND sisters (Aretha Franklin, Dinah Washington) of the music that created Rock n Roll. Warn your neighbords now because you might want to sing along.

Produced by Lex Gillespie for The Rhythm & Blues Foundation
Executive Producer: Suzan Jenkins
