NY Screamers, Turkish Youth and Improv Comedians

At last, we unveil the results of our experiment into the nature of the New York scream. Then, Turkish youth grapple with the uneasy question of modernity. Throw in an hour of comedy (sort of) and and an of Strip Clubs (sort of kind of), and what you've got is another average week of Radio Lab.

Hour1

Pressures of the Uspeakable, the NEW YORK VERSION!

A few weeks ago, we asked you to call a number - 669 2724 - and scream into the telephone. Our purpose was purely scientific. 10 years, Dr Gregory Whitehead, director of the International Institute of Scream Studies, performed this same experiment on the Australian public. And his analysis broke new scientific ground in our understanding of the complexities of the human scream. The one problem: the study did not include New York data. And we all know New Yorkers can scream.

WNYC listeners, as expected, stepped up to the plate. After much anticipation, we've got Dr Gregory Whitehead on the line to unveil his analysis of the messages you left. You'll never hear a scream the same again.

to the complete, original Scream Study.

Muslims & Modernity, Waiting for the Dawn

In the second half hour, BBC producer Roger Hardy takes us to the streets of Istanbul, where a clash is underway between secular and religious value-systems, between the stasis of tradition and the flux of modernity.

Hour 2

Whose Line Is It Anyway?

It might as well be the birthplace of modern comedy (and too bad for us, it's not in New York). Since 1955, Chicago's "The Second City" comedy club has spawned a staggering list of famous funny people: Gilda Radner, Alan Alda, Alan Arkin, Jim Balushi, James Balushi, Eugene Levy, Shelley Long, Tim Meadows, Horatio Sanz....and the list goes on for about twenty pages. Some credit to the club (which is now in a bunch of other cities as well) with crystalizing the art and science of improv.

Second City alum Ed Asner takes us on a very funny journey through the clubs history. Expect lots of comedy sketches.

Narrator: Ed Asner
Producer: Judith Kampfner

Hour 3

Strip Club USA

Producer Helen Borten continues her exploration of the idea of "home," but this time in Strip Clubs. We've all passed by those neon lit doors, covered in contact paper, with varying degrees of curiosity about what goes on inside, and inside the minds of those inside. Back by popular demand, Parts 1 and 2 of Strip Club USA.
