Pop Songs, Strip Clubs, and Commercials

This week, radiolab pins down the powers of pop, ventures into Strip Club USA and takes us on a one hour journey into the history of modern advertising.

Power of Pop
Why do certain pop songs get in our head and beat our brains like piantas? What sonic engineering goes into these pop weapons? In the first hour, Radio Lab tries to pin down the power of pop. We fail, because Pop by very definition is elusive, else it wouldn't have that fizz that we crave and hate ourselves for craving. But at the very least, we'll hear 4 segments about 4 different pop songs that grab hold of your ear and never let go.

Strip Club USA
Producer Helen Borten continues her exploration of the idea of "home," but this in Strip Clubs. We've all passed by those neon lit doors, covered in contact paper, with varying degrees of curiosity about what goes on inside, and inside the minds of those inside. Parts 1 and 2 of Strip Club USA.

Advertising
Just to prove we're public radio rebels, this hour Radio Lab will play lots and lots of commercials. WNYC's Curtis Fox takes us on a one hour journey into the history of modern advertising, from World War II to the present.
