Barrett McGurn opens the evening with announcements about upcoming Overseas Press Club events and introducing those seated at the head table.
Victor Riesel introduces the featured speaker, Walter Reuther of the AFL–CIO. Reuther speaks of the disparities in advances in the physical sciences, but not in the human and social sciences. His focus is the great resources that have been spent on the development of nuclear weapons while much of the world still goes hungry and unclothed. He speaks passionately about the waste of the production of weapons that can never be used.
