Map | New York City's Coworking Centers
Tuesday, October 09, 2012 - 12:00 AM
New York City is home to several dozen “coworking” locations, places where people who don’t work in traditional offices can rent a desk and have a place of work.
Whether it’s freelance writers or telecommuters or budding entrepreneurs, coworking allows different types of people to join together and have access to all the advantages of an office job, without having to work for the same organizations. The majority of these offices are in Manhattan, from Midtown to the Financial District.

One more coming this winter! The Centre for Social Innovation (disclosure: I am Exec Director!) is opening in Chelsea, 26th and 11th. Our focus is exclusively social entrepreneurs and nonprofits - http://socialinnovation.org
Oh you crazy kids, so inventive! Except that this idea has been around for decades. On the originial Bob Newhart show, Bob's office was in a set up like this with a shared receptionist, refrigerator, etc. Newhart was a proto hipster I guess. Indeed, there are multiple national chains that operate these sorts of shared spaces.
There's a lovely co-working space in Gowanus at the gallery and reading room Proteus Gowanus, 543 Union Street. It's down a beautiful 19th C industrial alleyway, quiet and communal. www.proteusgowanus.org/Study-Hall.
