    Ethiopiques, Old and New

The French series of recordings called Ethiopiques documents the remarkable combination of James Brown funk, 60s psychedelia, Indonesian scales, Hindi film scores, and European marching bands that formed the sounds of "Swinging Addis" in the early 1970s. We'll hear Ethio-pop and Ethio-jazz from Mahmoud Ahmed and Tlahoun Gessesse, among others, as well as newcomers from the US and France: the Either Orchestra and Le Tigre (des Platanes).

I can't thank John/you enough for last night's AMAZING broadcast of Ethioptiques. I actually bought one of the albums on a whim from Kim's video music store in the mid 90's ... loved it, and promptly forgot it when I "storaged" my hundreds of CDs, having digitized only a smattering of favorites ... what a mistake, as your program proved. I need to be listening to this music more often! Thanks for bringing it to light and for the exceptionally well-edited selection you played last night. I wish I could have the John S mix from the whole 20-volume set!!!

Christine, the "John S mix" of the Ethiopiques series would consist of me starting Volume 7 at the beginning and playing it through to the end. Mahmoud Ahmed's "Ere Mela Mela" was the album that jolted me into awareness of the Ethio-pop scene back in 1985 or 86, and it remains my favorite album from that scene.

The power of radio. Due to time difference I rely on the listen again option and if we did not have that I would not have got on this musical ride. A brilliant show and I immediately purchased some of this music. Like the previous comment i had one in the vaults somewhere but this show really sparked something off again.

Fantastic and thanks again to JS and his team

Things With Strings

New Sounds

Airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this edition of New Sounds, hear new music for strings, including music from Andrew Bird, whose little-known companion album of adventurous instrumentals called “Useless Creatures” incorporates West African rhythms and showcases his multi-layered violin loops.

New Sounds Essentials: World Music

New Sounds

Airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
New Sounds presents another night of recommended recordings, this time in the “world music” vein. Hear selections by the Algeria-born and San Francisco-based DJ Cheb I Sabbah, Ethiopian soul singer Mahmoud Ahmed, and others.

Away From Jazz

New Sounds

airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this New Sounds, get a load of jazz musicians stepping away from the jazz tradition. There's music from punkass jazz melody-makers Gutbucket off of their latest release, "A Modest Proposal." Also, we'll hear from the latest by Matthew Shipp, called "Harmony and Abyss" and much more.

In Robert Moran's Kitchen

New Sounds

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
