    Paul Lansky's "Music Box"

    Chatter and Soundscapes

Hear Paul Lansky's hiphop-inspired 'chatter' piece, on this edition of New Sounds. "Wordless. Chatter of Pins," is a response to an invitation by Keith and Mende Obadike to contribute a track of music inspired by hiphop. Also from his new release, Music Box, listen to the introverted lyricism of his "Pavane Noir." Plus, music by soprano saxophonist, improviser/composer, and acoustician Jonas Braasch. From his recent "Global Reflections," we'll hear pieces formed with nature's ability to align independent events to form interesting patterns. That and much more.

    Dear John,

Terrific NS Live last night at Merkin!

Any chance you can help me identify another word and music piece? I think it's Roy Nathanson(Sp?) and something about a fire at a bar and grill?

You were great at helping me find Translucence. Sorry, no good deed goes unpunished.

    THANKS,

    Carol Greenberg

    P.S. How's Jerry from Queens?

  • [2] John Schaefer from WNYC March 25, 2008 - 01:44PM

Carol, the piece you're asking about is indeed a Roy Nathanson work. "Fire At Keaton's Bar and Grill" is the name, and it was recorded by Six Degrees REcords. www.sixdegreesrecords.com - also available at Amazon, etc.

And Jerry From Queens is doing fine, just really busy and often unable to call in as he used to do. I'm amazed how many "fans" he picked up that way though!

Things With Strings

New Sounds

Airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this edition of New Sounds, hear new music for strings, including music from Andrew Bird, whose little-known companion album of adventurous instrumentals called “Useless Creatures” incorporates West African rhythms and showcases his multi-layered violin loops.

New Sounds Essentials: World Music

New Sounds

Airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
New Sounds presents another night of recommended recordings, this time in the “world music” vein. Hear selections by the Algeria-born and San Francisco-based DJ Cheb I Sabbah, Ethiopian soul singer Mahmoud Ahmed, and others.

Away From Jazz

New Sounds

airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this New Sounds, get a load of jazz musicians stepping away from the jazz tradition. There's music from punkass jazz melody-makers Gutbucket off of their latest release, "A Modest Proposal." Also, we'll hear from the latest by Matthew Shipp, called "Harmony and Abyss" and much more.

In Robert Moran's Kitchen

New Sounds

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
