New Sounds

Ralph TownerBarely Baroque
For this New Sounds, hear new arrangements of 17th and 18th century music, including J.S. Bach by the Jacques Loussier Trio, and art songs by The Dowland Project. Also, the new music quartet Clogs mess with baroque minimalism in music by Johann Hieronymus Kapsburger and Ralph Towner flirts with baroque rhythms on his 12-string. And, as always, much more.

New Sounds

New Sounds Essentials: World Music
New Sounds
Airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
New Sounds presents another night of recommended recordings, this time in the “world music” vein. Hear selections by the Algeria-born and San Francisco-based DJ Cheb I Sabbah, Ethiopian soul singer Mahmoud Ahmed, and others.
Away From Jazz
New Sounds
airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this New Sounds, get a load of jazz musicians stepping away from the jazz tradition. There's music from punkass jazz melody-makers Gutbucket off of their latest release, "A Modest Proposal." Also, we'll hear from the latest by Matthew Shipp, called "Harmony and Abyss" and much more.
In Robert Moran's Kitchen
New Sounds
From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.

Listening to New Sounds, Feb 2. What was the music John Shaefer was playing just before 11 PM, something called Rehearsing the Choir? Do you have info on this music? I really liked the piece.
2/2/08 11PM-Midnight show about Jazz that is not quite Jazz, play list is not posted, but the band was from Belgium called (phonetic spelling) "OXACMABOULE" an album from the 80's. Could you please send me the playlist a/o proper spelling, I have been looking for the 1st song played for 20 years. It used to be the opening song from a DJ named "The Immigrant" on WFMU in the 80's-90's.
Thank you much appreciateD
Hi there! The cut you mentionned is entitled "Milano Per Caso" and it can be found on Marc Hollander's band Aksak Maboul "Onze Danses pour Combattre La Migraine" which was released on Crammed Discs in Belgium back in the late 70's and more recentely on CD. I did indeed use this piece as the opening theme for my WFMU 91.1FM show which I hosted between 1979 and 1991. I later kept on using the same piece on my CKUT 90.3FM show in Montreal between 1991 and 2004 when I left for Radio-Canada's Espace musique where I still do radio every Friday evening between 8:00PM and 11:00PM as well as at other times. For more details, please go to: www.radio-canada.ca/espacemusique and click on my name in the section labelled "Animateurs". Good to see that some people remember! Stay creative!
Dan Behrman, The Immigrant
