    Swedish quartet Väsen (www.vasen.se)

    New from the North

This New Sounds program explores new works coming out of Scandinavia, with some music based in folk traditions, and played by bands who share several different members. We’ll hear from the Swedish supergroup Väsen, four musicians who have done projects ranging from nyckelharpa orchestras and Swedish traditional bands to collaborating with the Kronos Quartet. Plus, there’s music by Garmarna, who formed in 1990, inspired by Väsen’s nyckelharpist Olav Johansson’s musical score for a production of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Not to be outdone, there’s also music by the group Hurdy Gurdy, featuring the combined forces of Hedningarna’s Hållbus Totte Mattson (Hedningarna) and Garmarna’s Stefan Brisland-Ferner (Garmarna), put the Swedish Hurdy Gurdy through its paces. Listen also for music from Frigg, the Finnish/Forwegian string band with family ties to the great Finnish fiddle ensemble JPP, and perhaps some music from the quartet Swåp, who fuse Celtic traditions with those of Swedish folk. And a whole lot more…

Very good show. Thanks for broadcasting. Good music indeed. There is so much good music coming out of Scandinavia in recent years.

  • [2] Mel from Bayside, NY October 02, 2007 - 10:59PM

John should be informed that the nyckelharpa is played with a bow--NOT a wheel like the hurdy-gurdy. See a nice picture at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyckelharpa The two instruments have little in common when it comes to playing and application. The nyckelharpa is much more like a violin.

  • [3] Anna Karlsson from London October 03, 2007 - 10:28AM

    oh oh oh oh!!!!

Please go and research the nyckelharpa properly before saying that it involves turning a wheel! They might be contemporaneous and have the same method of stopping the strings, but the nyckelharpa is bowed and they really they do sound very very different! (I know I'm repeating Mel here, but I couldn't not say something!!!!)

Great show though! Thanks for making it available online so I could hear it.

  • [4] John Schaefer from NY NY October 03, 2007 - 01:20PM

Thanks Anna and Mel. Not sure what happened there - I've seen both instruments played live in our studio and should've known better. Sometimes at the end of a long day (I also host "Soundcheck" here at 2pm each day) Mister Brain goes to sleep while Mister Mouth continues working...

Things With Strings

New Sounds

Airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this edition of New Sounds, hear new music for strings, including music from Andrew Bird, whose little-known companion album of adventurous instrumentals called “Useless Creatures” incorporates West African rhythms and showcases his multi-layered violin loops.

New Sounds Essentials: World Music

New Sounds

Airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
New Sounds presents another night of recommended recordings, this time in the “world music” vein. Hear selections by the Algeria-born and San Francisco-based DJ Cheb I Sabbah, Ethiopian soul singer Mahmoud Ahmed, and others.

Away From Jazz

New Sounds

airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this New Sounds, get a load of jazz musicians stepping away from the jazz tradition. There's music from punkass jazz melody-makers Gutbucket off of their latest release, "A Modest Proposal." Also, we'll hear from the latest by Matthew Shipp, called "Harmony and Abyss" and much more.

In Robert Moran's Kitchen

New Sounds

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
