Gerardo Núńez (© Daniel Muńoz / flamenco-world.com)Flamenco Festival
Palestinian oud player Simon Shaheen and Flamenco guitarist Gerardo Nunez perform in the WNYC studio on this edition of New Sounds. Oud master Simon Shaheen (heâs also a violinist) is one of the most important Arab musicians and composers of his generation. He's also a teacher who has done a great deal to foster Arabic music in the West. Gerardo NĂșñez, known for his cross-cultural collaborations, is both a guitar virtuoso and a highly respected flamenco innovator. He is one of the best Flamenco guitarists in the world today, equally comfortable with playing deeply emotional traditional Flamenco at an amazing speed as he is venturing into jazz, Latin music, and other genres. Speaking of Flamenco, New York's annual Flamenco Festival gets underway on February 3.

Away From Jazz
New Sounds
airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this New Sounds, get a load of jazz musicians stepping away from the jazz tradition. There's music from punkass jazz melody-makers Gutbucket off of their latest release, "A Modest Proposal." Also, we'll hear from the latest by Matthew Shipp, called "Harmony and Abyss" and much more.
In Robert Moran's Kitchen
New Sounds
From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
