Resistance Is Futile
"Sure, there's still resistance to the concept of electric guitar in the orchestra," says American composer Steve Mackey. "It's closed a lot of doors, but it's opened a lot too, and those are doors that I want to go through." Though always controversial, music for electric guitar and orchestra is less of an anomaly than one might expect. On this edition of New Sounds we hear selections from Rarum, the new CD by Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal; John Adams’s Naive & Sentimental Music (with its guitar-tinged second movement); and works by Steve Mackey.

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
