While contemporary jazz has been often pigeonholed into categories of "traditional" and "experimental," a new breed of jazz pianists seems to forge a distinct path – one that incorporates hip hop, rock, and world music influences. Host John Schaefer features music by Matthew Shipp (pictured), The Bad Plus, Raw Materials, and Jason Moran, whose hard-to-classify CD Modernistic was named the second best jazz recording of 2002 by the New York Times. Moran's influences include Schumann, James P. Johnson, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Afrika Bambaataa.

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
