In recordings and concerts, SAVAE, the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble, has made the early music of Latin America its special focus. The group's unique a cappella sound is heard in this New Sounds Live program from the World Financial Center’s Winter Garden in November 2000. Here the ensemble presents Renaissance music of the Aztecs of Mexico - music that harkens back to the spiritual birth of Mexico's Hispanic culture. Many of the pieces, transcribed from original cathedral archival manuscripts, were composed by native Aztec and Nahua composers of the 16th century, some of which have not been heard for over 400 years. The results are beautiful and strangely haunting.

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
