In March 2000, nearly 40 years after he made his first records, Bob Dylan was celebrated by the composer John Corigliano, who composed a song cycle for the soprano Sylvia McNair entitled, Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan. The 35-minute cycle is based on Dylan's texts, if not his actual songs. The results are often fascinating. "Blowin' in the Wind" incorporates a passacaglia bass figure, "Mr. Tambourine Man" sounds like a fractured minstrel song, while ''Chimes of Freedom" is expanded with tremulous piano sonorities. For comparison's sake, host John Schaefer presents Dylan's original versions alongside the Corigliano remakes.

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
