Tomoko YonedaProgram #2112
The results are in for the 17th annual New Sounds Listener Poll, spotlighting the best new-music releases of 2002. Sorting through the respones, a lot of things leap to life. What particularly stands out are the number of veteran artists who ranked high this year - distinguished names like the Kronos Quartet, Philip Glass, Yo-Yo Ma, and Peter Gabriel. And yet, lesser-knowns like Michelle DiBucci, John Luther Adams, and SAVAE also had a good year. Regardless, there was plenty of diversity and brilliance in evidence, as we hear on this evening's program. Thanks to all of the listeners who voted.

Away From Jazz
New Sounds
airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this New Sounds, get a load of jazz musicians stepping away from the jazz tradition. There's music from punkass jazz melody-makers Gutbucket off of their latest release, "A Modest Proposal." Also, we'll hear from the latest by Matthew Shipp, called "Harmony and Abyss" and much more.
In Robert Moran's Kitchen
New Sounds
From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
