Jazz vocalist Nora York launched her career on the Lower East Side performance art circuit, and subsequently won acclaim for her daringly unconventional interpretations of popular jazz standards. She frequently shifts the gender of the lyrics, or alter the emphasis of the song, as we hear in cuts from her album Double Take, as well as a live recording of "Alabama Song," from Symphony Space's recent Wall To Wall Kurt Weill program. Continuing with the theme of updating famous standards, we feature a performance in the WNYC studio by Suzzy and Maggie Roche; and the band Last Forever, from a New Sounds Live performance at Merkin Hall.

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
