Singer/songwriter Susan McKeown has one of the strongest, most expressive voices voices in contemporary Irish music. On Lowlands, her second collection of traditional songs, her connection with the roots of Celtic music is co-mingled with such instruments as the kora (African harp), erhu (Chinese fiddle), and tabla (Indian drum) as well as the less exotic violin, guitar, and tin whistle. McKeown moved from her native Dublin to New York in 1990, an event that she says paradoxically made her feel more Irish.

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
