New Sounds

Program #1939
Music that crosses borders and blurs boundaries highlights this installment of New Sounds. The innovative trio Codona (Collin Walcott, Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos) that recorded for ECM is heard plying their unique fusion of Western jazz and various Eastern idioms. Jim Pepper was another leading pioneer of jazz-rock fusion, who successfully melded Native American music with American jazz arrangements. We hear the song "Witchi Tai To" which was originally a peyote chant and later gave Pepper a top 40 crossover hit. Also on tap is Australian cult favorite, the Necks, and New York-based guitarist/composer Joel Harrison, who appears at the 2002 New York Guitar Festival and plays a colorful, multi-textured jazz influenced by innumerable ethnic traditions, R&B and modern classical music.

Away From Jazz
New Sounds
airs daily at 11PM on 93.9 FM
For this New Sounds, get a load of jazz musicians stepping away from the jazz tradition. There's music from punkass jazz melody-makers Gutbucket off of their latest release, "A Modest Proposal." Also, we'll hear from the latest by Matthew Shipp, called "Harmony and Abyss" and much more.
In Robert Moran's Kitchen
New Sounds
From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
