Hear a sampling of choral music from the world over. Brooklyn's own a cappella outfit, the Persuasions, sing both music by the Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa. If these covers seem at odds with the doo-wop aesthetic, in fact, Frank Zappa himself loved R&B vocal groups so much that he reverently parodied them and even made the Persuasions one of the first signings to his Bizarre label in the late 1960s. Also on this evening's program is music from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the unmatched masters of the South African a cappella form known as "isicathamiya" or "mbube;" and a Georgian choir recorded live from the City of London Festival.

New Sounds
From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
