Performing in the WNYC studio is the Turtle Island String Quartet, which presents new recordings made with the legendary jazz-Latin clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera. If this seems like an unusual match on first glance, in fact it has a precedent in the charanga orchestra, a late-19th century Cuban ensemble that touched off the popular new dance, the danzón. This elegant style, a perfect marriage of European stateliness with a syncopated African groove, became the progenitor of such popular crazes as the mambo and cha-cha-chá. One hundred years later, the TISQ explores its own view of European and African styles via Latin America. The results are not unlike an ensemble originated by Mozart himself, the clarinet quintet.

From October 30, 1989, the infamous "cooking show" with composer/raconteur Robert Moran. Recorded while cooking an Indian dinner in John Schaefer's kitchen, for reasons still not entirely clear. Along the way, we hear an "acoustic" version of Cage's 0:00 - for amplification of chopping vegetables and blender. And don't miss the teary conversation as onions are chopped. View the the recipes.
