Extending the Violin-The Undead

Show #22

Monday, August 18, 1986

For this From the Vaults program from 1986, it’s way back to the days of the “extended instruments” series on New Sounds. This show focuses on the violin and its off-shoots, featuring violinist and composer Michael Galasso, who creates hypnotic music with just a solo violin and tape loops. Hear selections from Galasso’s Scenes (1983) collection of works composed over a number of years for theatre works by Robert Wilson. Also, works by nomadic electronic composer Bernard Xolotl and abstract electronic music by composer and visual artist Stephen Nester. To close out the program of music for “extended violin,” hear from the soulful virtuoso violinist and vocalist L.Shankar, (who now goes by Shankar), improvising on his 10-string acoustic double violin.
