New Sounds

When I came to US as an Indian foreign student in 1985, New Sounds was one of the two programs I used to listen and tape on a regular basis. Before coming over to US I developed a fascination with electronic music after hearing Jarre's Oxygene and Schulze's X. But it was almost impossible for me to get hold of such albums in those days in India. Coming from that situation, New Sounds suddenly held the door for electronic and avant garde music wide open for me. I can't describe how excited I was at that time to discover this show. I used to religiously tape each episode till finally my professional life took over and I had to move away from the northeast. For a long time when I was actively shopping for used LPs and CDs I always used John's New Sounds book. Years later I always wondered if there would be a newer edition of that book.

Since then internet has changed everything. Nowdays I am back in Northeast, but most of my music comes over the net these days and I was so thrilled to discover this archive sometime ago. Time to time, like today, I go back and listen some of these old old shows and try to relive the thrills I experienced then.

Thanks for the comment - always glad to hear from an old-timer. I too have often wondered if there would be a new edition of the New Sounds book, but sadly, despite interest from several publishers, I simply haven't found time to make it happen... largely because the shows keep me so busy.

Anyway, glad you've rediscovered the show through the archives.
