Episode #3381
Altered Sounds of Acoustic Guitars
Friday, September 21, 2012
For this New Sounds program, hear music for acoustic guitar that has been altered or augmented in some way, either by splicing tape, via electronic sounds, or computer trickery of some kind. Listen to a work from the late Michael Hedges, for acoustic guitar and tape, chopped up, layered, and with some parts even spliced in backwards.
Then, New Zealand-born composer John Metcalf's work "The Third Fire" is for guitar plus digital delay, and features guitarist Tom Kersten. Plus, there's altered guitar in an epic work from Dominic Frasca, where he feeds the instrument's sound through a laptop which enables each string to become a separate instrument in his work "Deviations. That, and more.
