Influenced by Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett (without the moans), Portuguese jazz pianist and film score composer Bernardo Sassetti brings the surrealistic and ethereal to the trio setting. We’ll hear from his latest release, “Motion” on this New Sounds – maybe an arrangement of Sparklehorse , or perhaps Federico Mompou.
Then there’s more new music for piano by London 12-string acoustic guitar virtuoso/multi-instrumentalist James Blackshaw from his eight movement “All Is Falling” (note: like Dylan, he –gasp! – goes electric in parts of this swirling 45-minute long song cycle.) Plus, singer-keyboardist-composer Judith Berkson melds the cantorial and classical to create something like a quirky cross of Schubert lied and the synagogue without turning "microtonal" into a dirty word. Also, hear some recent trio music from both the Vijay Iyer Trio, and the Neil Cowley Trio.
