Episode #3151
Robert Fripp’s Soundscapes, Live 2010
Wednesday, December 22, 2010
Electric-guitar based ambient music created in the moment by Robert Fripp is what you’ll hear on this New Sounds. Best known as the founder and leader of King Crimson, he developed a tape-looping technique eventually dubbed “Frippertronics,” which he used when he worked with Brian Eno in the mid 1970’s. (Fripp also formed an acoustic steel string performance-ensemble - the League of Crafty Guitarists in the mid-80’s - which has influenced countless guitarists.)
Frippertronics has become Soundscapes, where he creates loops in real time, creating multiple layers, and then improvises solos on top of all of it. Fripp set up in the secular cathedral of the World Financial Center for a two-day residency in early December of 2010 and we’ll hear part of a live performance recorded on December 4, along with John Schaefer’s interview.

Just simply wonderful.
Absolutely beautiful and otherworldly.
I recall seeing him in a place in the village called The Kitchen..also seem to think it was earlier than1981, more like 1979/80?
Happy to find this here... A wonderful deepening of my day...
I remember an early Frippertronics concert I saw in a church in the West Village in 1981. Most excellent. Years later, I'd make a point of going to WFC to hear Robert when he was around. He did it for years. I'd bring a book, sit and listen. I love NY for things like this.
very coool fripp continues forward, he lays like he speaks,it seems.
I was at the WFC for all four performances of this latest "in residency" and all of them were most amazing...thank you again, Mr. Fripp for the gorgeous ambience that filled the Winter Garden.
Please remember. In 74 Fripp told us it was the end. Then five years later got Discipline.
Fripp is a big and great intellectual poet, not just because is inspired but because inspired me.
A fine interview and wonderful music. Also found it both amusing and touching to hear the Starless melody as a setting for one part of the music.
Thanks!
Thanks for this interview. Nice to hear a touch of Starless to thread to a new beginning as it has summed up before that which has passed.
Thank you indeed for this interview and a glimpse at the soundscapes emanating from a place overlooking "ground zero". Nice to hear Robert Fripp is ending and starting yet another phase in his creative life.
Thank you for this interview. Wonderful, just wonderful.
