Episode #2853

New "Concert" Music

« previous episode | next episode »

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Listen to music by composer/pianist Missy Mazzoli and her band Victrola – a blend of winds, strings, keyboards, and lo-fi electronics. Consuming and arresting clarinet, violin, and keyboard melodies meet swirling strings, spoken samples, and minimal processing in Mazzoli’s “I Am Coming For My Things” and “A Door Into the Dark.” Also, hear Evan Ziporyn’s motoric minimalism on his work “Drill,” featuring the composer as bass clarinet soloist. There’s also new music of a concentrated micro-minimalist sort from David Lang with his storm of oboes surrounding a percussive glass bottle (or CAN, if you prefer) in the buzz-saw sharp, “I Fought the Law,” as performed by Sentierri Selvaggi. And, much more.

Dear Luna,

At the time this show aired, the band was called Victrola. They have since changed it to Victoire. Read here at their label's site: http://tinyurl.com/NAMvictoire

Thanks for listening,

CORRECTION: The name of the band this article discusses is VICTOIRE not "Victrola". Incredible band

Hi Gordon,
"I Fought the Law" WAS recorded by the Bobby Fuller Four - but that was six years after the Crickets did the original version(after Buddy Holly had left). You could look it up. (I did.)

"I Fought the Law and the Law Won" was done by the Bobby Fuller Four, not Buddy Holly or his Crickets. OTOH, I didn't know The Clash had covered it.

That's one for me and one for you. ;-)

Your arrogant, dorky radio promos are driving me insane. They are so self-congratulatory .. "Oh my GOD you remembered what degree I have? WOW! How did you do that? I mean, that's amazing!!!" --How did the HOST recall something about the guest's biography? Uh, well, gee, maybe he had a press hit. Who knows. WHO CARES! And the other awful clip with Led Zep playing (hee, hee, isn't that funny?) ..attention producers: you playing Zep pander to the Zep crowd (hey, everybody, look at us, we are hip and cool, aren't you surprised?) -- and playing this clip over and over and OVER ad nauseum is TRANSPARENT and dumb. Stop patting yourself on the back and just play the damn music from the show- briefly! - so I can get through these 15,000 per day ads peacefully.
