Music inspired by Bardo, one of many Tibetan Buddhist afterlife states, is the focus of this edition of New Sounds. According to the Tibetan Book of the Dead, "bardo" literally means "an interval between two things." More to the point, it has inspired an assortment of musical responses over the years, by Peter Michael Hamel, Gabrielle Roth, and John Moran, among others. The more grandiose Philip Glass opted to base a portion of his 12-movement Symphony No. 5 around the concept (its subtitle is "Requiem, Bardo, Nirmanakaya"). The work is a dazzling mix of Western and Buddhist terms, and it also includes Bible verses, the Koran, Hindu scriptures, Rumi, a Bulu creation story, and much more.
