Saturday, March 22, 2003

From the New Sounds Live concert series, we hear the Kamikaze Ground Crew, a group comprised of several downtown vets including trumpeter Steven Bernstein (Sex Mob, Lounge Lizards), saxophonist and drummer Peter Apfelbaum (Hieroglyphics Ensemble), and drummer Kenny Wollesen (John Zorn, Tom Waits). Also, multi-reedist Ned Rothenberg composes and performs on saxophones, flutes — including shakuhachi — and bass clarinet. Active as a solo artist and avant-garde jazz performer since the 1970s, we hear him performing with Sync, a group with guitarist Jerome Harris.
