Operatic singing isn't always about monumental sets, voluminous costumes, orchestral glitter, and other symbols of theatrical excess. Many of today's leading figures on the new-music scene have written works for operatic vocals, including John Harle, a leading saxophonist and composer of Terror and Magnificence, his hit 1996 Decca album, which featured a collaboration with singer/songwriter Elvis Costello. Other unlikely artists partial to the genre include Bill Laswell, Voce, Vangelis, Ragnar Grippe, Nicholas Lens, and Pierre Schroeder. And for a more traditional approach, we hear mezzo Jennifer Larmore and soprano Hei Kyung Hong in the Flower Duet from Delibe's Lakme.
