Part one of a four-part series "on the scene" of the first mass evacuation drill in New York State. 1,500 people in Binghamton, NY were evacuated to Deposit, N.Y.
In this installment, we hear an evacuation drill of Calvin Coolidge Elementary School, and then the actual evacuation. The reporter interviews school children about the evacuation as they leave the school for home. The reporter reminds listeners that the children are drilled 10-12 times per years for fires, and therefore are very very adept at this evacuation. In a little over 4 minutes 1,100 students were evacuated. Evacuating as a family group is preferred - rather than evacuating the children and families separately for them to be reunited at the reception area.
