  Ray pronounces his surname 'Davis', Dave pronounces his surname 'Davees', that's all to it. Jimmy Page has never denied that he played the original YRGM lesd guitar solo because he wants people to think that he played on most every british single of the '60s. Dave played that lead solo but the myth is perpetuated...

  Excuse me, people. Mr. Lopate's first question to Ray Davies was how he prefers his name pronounced. The response was like the word "viz", not "vis". But then Mr. Lopate continued to pronounce his name "Davis". I've heard that LL has a power game hangup; he likes to think he knows everything, even when presented with evidence to the contrary. And as for si from montreal and ann ashworth from boston; I don't know what your hang-ups are.

  Actually, I read a Jimmy Page interview (I wish I could remember where) about a year ago where he made very clear that his contributions to Kinks and Who recordings were strictly second unison rhythm guitar for the purpose of toughening the sound. He also said that participating in the Kinks and Who sessions enhanced his contemporary hard rock credibiity on the London session scene, which was important to him. Maybe Jimmy's mellowing some? In the interview where Dave Davies discussed the correct way to say "Davies", he was asked why Ray insisted on his alternate pronunciation. In response, the interviewer wrote that Dave made the time-honored circular motion at the side of his head, indicating that his brother was crazy. All in good fun, I'm sure.

  1. Ray pronounced/explained his name as DayViz - very clearly - during his X-Ray tour of a few years back. S/b end of story, please specifically id the interview with Dave where he demurs

  2. Ray told the story of Dave's lead on YRGM - three songs paid for by producers at PYE rex the first two were unsuccessful then one last chance - the third was YRGM and the rest is history - apparently during the YRGM session the brothers were locked in a feeling of belligerent futility - just before the solo Ray made some sort of furtive glance at his bro who screamed FU and then plows into the solo - Ray says you can hear the FU just before the solo starts - listen - and verify - Jimmy Page not in the house - busy playing guitar on Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man - with LED ZEP brothers Jones and Bonham... verify

  Going to see Ray on the 24th at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, with his band, not the chorus. Ray and the Kinks are my all time favorites. Have seen the Kinks many times and both Ray and Dave on their own. He is the poet laureate of rock.

  Although I have been a huge fan and humble admirer of The Kinks and specifically, Ray (always thought it was pronounced Daveeeees) Davies since 1974 when my college love introduced me to the music, I had NEVER seen the band live (shocking, I know) until, the Wellmont Theater show in NJ last month. Ray Davies continues to write the most profoundly amusing and heartbreaking songs I have ever heard. I love 'im!!!!!" Thank you WNYC for your incredible programing and great commentators!!   I just now found this exchange referring to Dave Davies pronouncing his name "Davis" or Day-viz" instead of "Day-vees"

  Owensboro is located in Daviess County, Kentucky, and the name is pronounced "Davis" or "Day-viz" in these parts. I doubt if there's any connection between Dave and Owensboro, but I find this quite interesting.
