The Audacity to Win

Wednesday, November 04, 2009

David Plouffe, the architect of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, discusses the campaign’s strategies and how they changed the face of politics. His book The Audacity to Win: The Inside Story and Lessons of Barack Obama’s Historic Victory tells the inside story of the campaign and reveals how digital technology and grassroots organization created a new kind of campaign.

After eight years of Bush back then, how hard was it really to beat any GOP candidate?

Will the President go to Copenhagen? Considering his recent trip on behalf of Chicago's Olympic bid and campaign rhetoric, a decision not to go is a win for the do-nothing-on-climate people. A second question: as a progressive, it seems that progressives have little clout within the Administration, why?

Plouffe's description of how to increase the electorate is innovative, but very scary: It's all about people doing things unthinkingly, just joining the bandwagon.

During the '92, '96, '00, and '04 elections I travelled in the NE and Midwest as a volunteer for the democrats. Obama's folks aggressively tried to recruit me in 2007, but the group-think attitude turned me off. I still think I did the right thing.

Bad timing on this book. Things are not going great:

    1. Joblessness is still through the roof.

    2. Economy is still in rough shape.

    3. Health Care Legislation is bogged down.

    4. Political endorsements have been embarassing.

    5. Olympic embarassment

    6. Afghanistan...

    7. Climate change...

It's like who cares. The campaign seems like a long time ago.

Congress didn't make him go on on Leno and put his foot in his mouth.

What was the reaction to Sarah Palin? A shock?

Those -- including those who voted for Obama -- who now are complaining that Obama hasn't changed the world in 10 months weren't listening during the campaign.

Especially in the general election, Obama repeatedly -- repeatedly -- reminded people that change wasn't going to happen overnight.

    David,

You're the man! I will follow you and Obama to the end of the earth. Now, please get Obama's people to stop sending me emails.

No one was expecting overnight. Something in ten months would be nice.

How many romances broke out among single underlings?
