Even someone without any special musical knowledge can hear the difference between a Gergiev (Russian sounding) performance and any western orchestra. Compare recordings of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings or The Nutcracker or Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet or The Nutcracker -- by Gergiev vs Bernstein/Solti/von Karajan/etc. The sound is very different -- darker and more intense.

Great feature. Gergiev has several new releases on his hall's new label. And the film speaks to a larger trend: Russian repatriation of its cultural treasures and a step-up in the arts. Gergiev's reach out also complements the good work of individuals like Viktor Vekselberg, whose Renova Group saw the pruchase of the fabrege eggs from Forbes and the repatriation of the famous Russian bells from Harvard to Moscow. Great stories of Russia-U.S. friendship and a booming arts and culture movement. More of these programs please!
