Mr. Schuman's history of Japan's growth seems to leave out the U.S. role in using Japan's industry to fight the Korean Warin the early 1950's. Am I right in recalling this fact?

Since the Karetsu's (sp) prevented internal free competition in Japan, they also prevented free competition from outsiders? arent the MITI and the keretsu's a violation of free trade? If so was a case ever brought by the US against them

One point your guest has not yet mentioned was the role of PIRACY of intellectual property in the rise of Asia, and a more important point, the fall of communism and socialism.

Regarding piracy, I well remember the vast "knocking off" of jeans, computers and software back in 1980s, while the US turned a blind eye - presumably to allow those countries to strengthen after our withdrawal from Vietnam. We wanted the "Asian tigers" to get prosperous to stem the communist push. But when we succeeded in bringing down the Communist bloc, and with the rapid move away from Socialism in India, we freed half the world's population from slavery and turned them into capitalists and competitive workers.

Being that East Asian economies continue to grow and become more developed, I pose this question:

Does Mr. Schuman think that there might be a more regional or counter-balanced form of international capitalism as opposed to a convergent form of global capitalism that seemed to be appearing during the 1990s and early 2000s?
