Thursday, July 09, 2009
Before President Obama went to Italy, he headed to Russia. We look at what came out of Obama's visit and what the meeting means for both countries with Steven Cohen, contributing editor to the Nation and author of Soviet Fates and Lost Alternatives: From Stalinism to the Cold War. Stephen Cohen is great!
I certainly do not think it speaks to the competency of the people surrounding President Obama in as much as it just means they are not fluent in Russian.
...and a small start is the first step towards bigger things and miles away from what we had the past 8 years.
"Flagrant Breach" Oh jeez here we go again.
steven you are making all sorts of of the wall generalizations, proof pleae of the problems President Obama is having with the Democratic Party.
Leonard,
Could you ask Mr. Cohen whether he believes it was appropriate for Obama to criticize the sentence and prosecution of Kourdokovsky(sp?)on a trip such as this?
Robert Plautz
America is a rather provincial, and chauvinistic, country that often overestimates its cultural and, particularly, political power. American values are American values, they are not necessarily universal values, although they sometimes overlap.
America sometimes confuses its "mission" as some sort of extension of the French Revolution's Declaration of the Rights of Man.
The subtle and behind the scenes approach is almost always a more useful in a realpolitik way.
OMG Russia doesn't understand why a Black Man is President of the US...please finish up with this clown.
Mr. Cohen had very smart comments, that normally we do not hear from WNYC or other media, both about the US and Russia. Refreshing... Hope to hear more from him. Thanks.
