The Secret Lives of Umpires

Friday, March 20, 2009

New York Times reporter Bruce Weber gives you an insider's look at the largely unknown world of professional umpires, the small group of men (and the very occasional woman) who make sure America's favorite pastime is conducted in a manner that is clean, crisp, and true. Weber not only interviewed dozens of professional umpires, but entered their world and trained to become an umpire for his book As They See 'Em.

Great explanation of the strike zone!

I seriously considered going to Umpire school

and did some preliminary investigation in the early '90's.

I am a woman who played softball since third grade through college. I realized that there was no way I'd ever get out of the minors.

It's unfortunate that umpires are not respected enough to be paid adequately during the early years.

    Leonard-

No questions on REPLAY? That's something that has just changed in the last year. I wonder if the umps like replay for home runs only, or maybe even close calls down the lines? Otherwise great interview!!
