Obama & Executive Power

Thursday, March 12, 2009

On the campaign trail Barack Obama was extremely critical of the Bush Administration's expansive view of executive power, but has any of that changed now that he is President? We'll talk to New York Times reporter Charlie Savage about how President Obama is dealing with the extraordinary powers the previous occupant of the White House has left him.

Hi! I think your guest wants to refer to 'civil LIBERTY' and not 'civil LIBERTARIAN', don't you? Or is there something he might want to clarify for us listeners?

Many of the Bush policies were based on an invocation of executive war powers? are we still in a state of war'. 2. Has there been revocation of Bush's Presidentail Directive: PD 51?

I think President Obama is consistent with the ideas he put forth in his writings prior to running for President. I am not surprised with his centrist policies. I am surprised that so many people did not seem to really know his views. President Obama is what we need at this time in history.

follow-up... the executive war powers problem is that this war on terrorism is its

open-endedness... which goes to: if we want to restore governmental balance of power, why not move away from war footing to an international crime?

    Judy #4:

I agree with you at least the first part. Anyone paying close attention to Obama's legislative history and policy statements should not be surprised. I think a lot of people saw what they wanted to see in him and now are having buyer's remorse. So.... pay better attention next time. As far as being what we need now...jury's still out. I am cautiously optimistic.
