A Kennedy in Hollywood

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Before he founded one of Americas great political dynasties Joseph Kennedy worked in the movie business in Hollywood. He made a tremendous amount of money as the head of three movie studios and even had an affair with Gloria Swanson. Cari Beauchamp chronicles this forgotten chapter of movie-making history in the book Joseph P. Kennedy Presents: His Hollywood Years.

He also had a torrid affair with Gloria Swanson. He built her a mansion in Englewood that still stands today.

An article in last months Vanity Fair talks about Joe kennedy's affair with Marlene Dietrich shortly before WWII. She later went on to bed JFK. Amazing woman !

Could you ask your guest about how he set up Alexander Pantages (Pantages Theaters)...

disgusting to applaud him with such attention but guess the story must be told in the name of history. that Roger thinks Marlene was an amazing woman for her affairs with father and son speaks more volumes about the values of New York men and maybe New York than any other critique. Get me outta here.

    Karen,

Speaking from California, I can assure you that New York looks like a bastion of civility and family ethics. If anything, the large immigrant communities (key word, communities) ensure a higher level of fidelity.

(Commentary from the guest, Cari Beauchamp, notwithstanding.)

New York isn't any more depraved than anywhere else in the country. Look at the divorce rate in the Bible Belt - most of those divorces originate in extramarital affairs.

Stay put, you could do worse.
