The Gamble
Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Thomas E. Ricks secured hundreds of hours of interviews with top military commanders in Iraq. The result is his new book The Gamble, which takes an in-depth look at General Petraeus's surge strategy and the the Iraq War from 2005 on. You can read Thomas Ricks blog here
Cutting For Stone
Dr. Abraham Verghese was lauded for his memoir about his time as a doctor in Tennessee during the onset of the AIDS epidemic. Now he has turned his skills to fiction writing with his novel Cutting for Stone.

Tony Kushner on Yiddish Literature
Sholem Aleichem was one of the greatest humorists yiddish literature and his work became the basis for the musical "Fiddler on the Roof". This year marks the 100th anniversay of his book Wandering Stars, a love story set in the world of Yiddish Thaeter. Tony Kushner joins us along with translator Aliza Shervrin to talk about the book and Aleichem's legacy.

Underreported: Bush's Legacy in the Oceans
In his final days before leaving office, President Bush created the largest marine sanctuary in the world off the coast of Hawaii. But, he also opened up large parts of the American coastline to oil drilling. Michael Sutton is Vice President of the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California and directs the aquarium's Center for the Future of the Oceans. He'll take us into the murky depths of Bush Administration's marine policies.
Underreported: AQ Khan on the Loose
AQ Khan, the father of Pakistan's nuclear program, has admitted to selling nuclear secrets to Libya, Iran, and North Korea. Late last week a Pakistani ordered Khan's release after five years of house arrest. David Albright, President of the Institute for Science and International Security in Washington, D.C., joins us to discuss the impact of Khan's release as US Special Representative Richard Holbrooke prepared to tour the region.

Jeanne-Claude created environmental works of art with her husband and fellow-conspirator/collaborator Christo. Together, they wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont-Neuf in Paris, and created The Gates, with billowy orange drapes, in Central Park. Jeanne-Claude just died at the age of 74. You can hear Leonard Lopate’s last interview with them both, from July 19, 1999.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, bacterial, viral, and parasitic organisms found in recreational water in the United States sicken thousands of people every year, and even result in deaths. We’ll speak with chemist and industrial hygienist Monona Rossol about the protozoa, amoebas and other things that love to go swimming with us. Monona is also founder and President of Arts, Crafts and Theater Safety.

Frank McCourt
The Leonard Lopate Show
Frank McCourt has been a guest many times on this show over the years, starting in 1996 for the memoir, Angela’s Ashes, that would earn him a Pulitzer Prize. Fame came to him late in life, after he’d retired at the age of 65 from teaching English and creative writing at public schools here in New York. He was a sweet, eloquent man who spoke with grace and humility; he just died at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer. You can hear him speaking with Leonard Lopate for his Survival Kit in 2000, and in 2005, for his memoir, Teacher Man.
