The Panic in Needle Park

The 1971 New York film "The Panic in Needle Park" starred Al Pacino as a drug addict, and was believed to have been the first film to show graphic depictions of intravenous drug use. Leonard talks to director Jerry Schatzberg and actor Kitty Winn about the making of the film, which is being screened at Film Forum (209 W. Houston) Jan. 30-Feb. 5.

That poor, poor puppy. Why'd you have to do that Mr. Schatzberg?
Terrific movie with terrific performances. But oh so very depressing, as it should be.
I salute Mr. Schatzberg for his photos for my favorite album of all time, Blonde on Blonde! (I've always loved the shot of Claudia Cardinale.)
how far we've come and where we (might) be heading...
I will always remember this film, because I first saw it in a run-down, small town theater in Ecuador in 1972, where one expects to see the ususal, instantly forgetable Hollywood B-movie fare. Imagine our surprise and complete sense of dislocation when we stumbled out of the theater two hours later! Although the names didn't mean much then, I certainly paid attention to DeNiro when I got back to the States.
