Nobel Laureate Mohamad Yunus says that creative, socially-conscious approaches to business can both reinvigorate capitalism and help eliminate global poverty. His new book is Creating a World Without Poverty.

    I've read (and recommended) Creating a World Without Poverty. In it, Dr. Yunus advances his concept of 'social business'. Does Dr. Yunus believe that GM or Chrysler could be run as a social business? Is America ready for social business?

    I am so excited about his definition of Capitalism! I've been saying this for YEARS! We can base an economy on anything, why not human potential?

    I know this is where we're heading! This is the sustainable future!

    Leonard: Would you ask Mr Yunus to compare / contrast Social Business with non-profits? Would he consider Non-Profits to be social businesses? Does he set up his social businesses as non-profits? Thank you.

    In a radio interview, Ann Korten recalled that she worked w Barack Obama's mother on microworked credit projects when they were in Jakarta. Perhaps Obama would be receptive to Dr Yunus' ideas.

    I was hoping that Mr. Yunus could discuss what specific roles charities will still have to provide that cannot be fulfilled in his idea of social business.

    Isn’t social business that Mohammad Yunis is advocating the same as socialism – Marxist type. According to Marx capital is generated when

    the surplus value, over and above that is necessary to maintain a worker, is appropriated by someone else – the capitalist.

    In fact criticism of socialist societies is based on the question of motivation:

    Due to lack of profit, people were not willing to work enough to generate

    Value over and above what was necessary to keep making jobs even incurring losses.

    Yunus' work is wonderful: Why should our only choices about what to do with money be profit or its opposite, pure charity? These are Calvinist Protestant choices which have historically underwritten capitalism in its current form. Both profit and charity help you get to heaven in this theology. They are based in individual salvation. But why not use our economic power to ignite someone else's power to live a better life by investing directly in their OWN PLANS? Look across to other people, not up to what God might think. Great segment!

    Too bad you did not mention kiva.org where people can lend online to mall projects around the world. Maybe I missed it.
