Be an Informed Citizen

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Barack Obama has said that transparency will be a key principle of his presidency. Journalist David Sanger explains why he thinks American citizens must be informed in order for our democracy to work…and what he thinks we most need to know about! He’s the author of The Inheritance.

Could Mr. Sanger comment on why major news organizations disproportionately direct their resources and talent to national and international news vis-a-vis state and local coverage, and whether this contributes to a greater degree of graft/corruption at the lower levels of government?

"Be an Informed Citizen" How exactly? Sanger has built a career in a medium that led us to a war in Iraq? He now wants us to believe Iran is a threat! A threat to whom exactly? Not us.

If transparency is so crucial then why aren't newspapers and other media lobbying hard for a bailout? Do they not trust their own abilities and role as watchdogs enough to make that case to the Bailout Fairies?

Can you ask him if he was disappointed with the NYT's reporting leading up to the war in Iraq?

Hey can you ask him if he thinks Israel should have a nuclear arsenal?

The Bush administration (I would guess knowingly) committed the fallacy of affirming the consequent with its claim that "there have been no attacks on the US, therefore our policy is good".

I've been carrying my lucky chocolate bar since 9/11 -- maybe that's why there hasn't been any attack.

David Sanger should know better, but given the Times's record on the Middle East, it shouldn't surprise us that he sounds like a Bush press flunky.

No one in the Arab world has ever suffered under the delusion that the US is a neutral arbiter in the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Sanger certainly knows this.

(tho that's not the delusion anyone is worried about hugh)
