Director Paul Schrader didn’t see any films before he was 18 years old thanks to a strict Calvinist education. His 1985 film “Mishima” is a portrait of the flamboyant writer, actor, and bodybuilder Yukio Mishima; it’s at the Film Forum Dec. 17-23 (209 W. Houston). His more recent film, 2008’s "Adam Resurrected," follows the story of a patient at a mental institution for Holocaust survivors in Israel. It’s at the Quad (34 W. 13th St.)

    I saw Mishima at the Upper East Side theater where it played for a short 3 weeks. It was near the end of the run, and I guess the audience was about 30 people.

    At the end of the movie, I felt mesmerized, just listening to the music and watching the credits go by.

    At some point I realized _no one else_ in the theater had risen to leave either. We all simply sat to the very end.

    And I'm sure not that many people had friends in Japanese crews.

    I"ve never been in a movie house where that happened, or anything close to it.
