Several years ago Carrie Fisher wrote a piece in the NY Times where she said that because of her fame and age, she was basically dating bus boys because successful men weren't interested in her. Is that really true?

love ms. fisher and the fact that she can be so frank vis a vis the more tragic parts of her drama-filled life. i can't listen to her recount these tales without hearing shirley maclaine singing "i'm still here" from "postcards from the edge". anyone who writes with such humility about her life deserves, at the very least, a happiness derived from simply surviving. bravo!

Unfortunately our society and media have tended to make a distinction between substance abuse and mental illness.

in fact, the current position of most knowledgable practitioners is that almost always substance abuse/addiction is a consequence of mental illness. The term "self-medication" is probably the most accurate and evolved term. Addiction/substance abuse cannot be dealt with without addressing the underlying illness.
