Soprano Dawn Upshaw, the first vocalist to receive a MacArthur Genius Grant, talks about her performance in Osvaldo Golijov's opera, "Ainadamar," at Carnegie Hall. It's based on the murder of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca by fascist Falangist forces.

Please tell Ms. Upshaw how much I loved her singing in the Gorecki 3rd Symphony. I heard it going home after seeing my patients one evening on WNYC years ago. It was one of the most difficult pieces to hear -- it was such a profound lament-- but her voice was so embracing and powerful that I had to run out to find the piece.
