Tuesday, November 04, 2008

Find out how the film industry has responded to the Bush years. The films we look at are:
HBO's "Recount" (2008)
"Rendition" (2007)
"W." (2008)
"D.C. 9/11: Time of Crisis" (2003)

Barbara Kellerman is James McGregor Burns Lecturer in Leadership at Harvard University; Peniel Joseph is Associate Professor of African and Afro-American Studies at Brandeis University.

Hear Laura Dern talk about her role in "Recount" on the Lopate Show in May 2008

Hey Professor Joseph! Brandeis alum, class of '04! Is Professor Nyangoni still there?

Also, I'm a little surprised there hasn't been an Obama biopic yet.

I was quite surprised by how the film W humanized Bush for me. I went in thinking it would be a humorous low-lights reel of W's bloopers, in the vein of the trailer, but I was surprised to find myself empathizing with W's relationship with his dad, and how he seemed to be manipulated by those around him. By no means was he devillanized, but it did make me feel for him in a way I did not expect.

I went to go see W the other night. I thought is was fantastic. I always love Oliver Stone's films, and this did not fail to please. Aside from the amazing performances of the actors playing Bush and his cabinet, I found the fact that it was a snapshot, albeit a fictionalized one, of a time-period. I was happy to see that it did not really judge Mr. Bush as the disaster that he has been.

Saw "W." last weekend. Reminded me of a cartoon - too much caricature, and strange backround music.

    I was dissapointed.
